Burning Words
The villains of history burnt books they deemed ‘subversive’ – censorship in its most visceral form.
I have made two sculptures investigating the act of book burning and the threat this poses to freedom of expression. A freely assembled terracotta ‘fire’ of extruded clay, and a stoneware sculpture fixed in position by a red glaze.
This works seeks to remind the viewer of the importance of freedom of speech, and protecting the right to express ourselves in our reading and our writing.
